About “Excel For Accounting Students”

Hi there! My name is Han, and since 2000, I have been an IT trainer specialising in Microsoft Office products. I specialised in Microsoft Excel because I grew to love its awesomeness… it’s a big program, complicated at times, but once you understand how to give it what it needs so it can give you what you need, it’s a great feeling. I liken it to climbing a mountain – I have a problem to solve, how can I get there? – and when I get to the top and plant my little flag it’s fantastic! I feel on top of the world.

Since 2016 I have been studying the AAT qualifications for bookkeeping and accountancy, because I’m interested in learning more about finance – money does make the world go round, after all. I have been helping fellow students with their Excel learning (it’s covered in detail at Level 3 in the synoptic exam) and wanted to share with you how you too can excel with Excel. (See what I did there?! Groan…) So I thought I would put it all together with sample spreadsheets for you to play with.

A little note about the way I train – I’m aware that there are many ways to achieve the same goal. I have learnt through experience that certain methods work better in some situations than other methods. Generally speaking, as far as I’m concerned, so long as you get to your goal that’s the main thing.

However, I’m also aware that you will be under time pressure during your exam, so I am aiming to give you the underlying knowledge behind why a thing is happening, so that you have the wherewithal to choose the right tool for the task at hand, and you have the confidence to fix a problem, should it occur. That means I may approach things in a way that is different from the way you learnt. That’s fine – feel free to stick with your method if you can work it quickly and can fix it when it goes wrong. But I’m also drawing on having taught thousands of adults over more than 17 years, which has given me plenty of awareness of what you need not just to learn the motions but to really harness the power of Excel and take it forward beyond where I leave off.

I dream that one day everyone will want one of these mugs!

(You do? That’s amazing! Head off here and fill yer boots!)
